Amritsar
Saturday, November 1st, 2008Sri Harmandir Sahib commonly known as The Golden Temple is the holy place of Sikhs and its also a renowned tourist spot. The city Amritsar derives its name from the lake surrounding the temple. Amrit means honey and Sar is the shortened word for Sarovar meaning lake.
It was originally built in 1572 CE. Then the fill fledged temple was built in 1588 CE and completed in 1601 CE.
The temple at night is a breathtaking view. With lots of light decorating the temple, its so lovely to see the reflection in water.
Jallianwala Bagh: It’s a 5 Mins walk from the temple. It is a memorial dedicated to the people who died in the massacre during the British Reign. In 1919 when there was a public gathering in the park, the British closed the exits and opened fire, killing 1579 men, women and children.
Wagah Border:
It is the Indo-Pak border, is 45 Mins drive from Amritsar. It is 29 Kms from Lahore. Daily morning and evening Border Formalities take place at 8 Am and 2.30 PM, including exchange of Newspapers.
Getting There:
Nearest Airport Raja Sansi International Airport and is 11 Kms from the city center. There are regular flights to and from Delhi. Also to London, Toronto, Singapore, Barcelona, Birmingham and to Central Asia.
Amritsar Railway station is well connected to New Delhi, Kolkata, Jammu, Varanasi, and Lucknow.
By road, you can reach Amritsar in 6-7 hours from Delhi. It is also connected to Chandigarh, Jammu, Katra, Dharamsala.
