Bijapur
Wednesday, November 5th, 2008Bijapur is a place which relishes the muslim architecture. Still the 16th and 17th century buildings exist here. This place is full of mosques,temples and palaces. It was formed during the rule of Adil Shahi(1490-1686 A.D). So this place has a strong presence of muslim architecture.
Transport ::
From bijapur, buses connect to badami, bidar, belgaum, gulbarga, hubli,sholapur,bangalore,hyderabad and pune.
Bijapur railway station has trains connecting mumbai,hyderabad,bangalore and sholapur.
Touring Spots ::
1) Golgumbaz :: This is the first place that comes to mind when i think of bijapur. It was built in 1659. Its speciality is the octagonal seven-storey towers. There is a gallery at the base of this huge monument. There is an entry fee for seeing this place. This place is the mausoleum of Adil Shah and his wives.
2) Jama Masjid :: This was built by Adil Shah in 1578 after he defeated the vijayanagar empire. It has a large courtyard for atleast 2000 people to worship at a time.
3) Citadel :: This place is surrounded by fortifies walls and a wide moat. The royal palace of Adil Shah was once present inside this. Only the Gagan Mahal built in 1561 is remaining now.
4) Ibrahim Rouza :: It is one of the best muslim monuments in India. It was built by Adil Shah II. This is the mausoleum of Adil Shah II and his wife and his two daughters and two sons.
