Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the largest and most popular wildlife sanctuaries in India. It covers an area of over 700 sq. kms. Periyar lake is present at the southern end of the sanctuary. It is an artificial lake created by the Britishers in the 19th century. Many animal species are found in this sanctuary. Some of them are wild boar, horse deer(sambar), barking deer, mouse deer, leopard, fox, mongoose and bison.This sanctuary has a Tiger reserve which shelters about 40 tigers. This place is also known a thekkady. Elephants are commonly found in this place. Night patrol jungle safaris are available at this place. Reptiles and many birds can be seen during the migrating season.
