Theyyam is Kerala’s most popular art form which was developed by Hindus and the folk dances depict the Hindu culture. This dance is performed as an offering to the gods. They are performed at sacred groves. Theyyam refers to the shape of the deity. Theyyams are of different types and they are about 450 in number. Each theyyam has its own form, story of origin, costumes, make-up, etc. The preparation for a performance includes fasting, meditation, long make-up and costume time. The performer make us feel like they are the real deity during their performance. The most important fact about theyyam is that, it is not taught in any schools or institutions. This art is passed down from generation to generation. Women do not perform theyyam.

Places of Interest Around Thrissur

There are three places around thrissur that tourists visit.They are

1) Sri Krishna Temple at Guruvayur which is at a distance of 33 kms from Thrissur is the most famous temple in kerala. Only Hindus are allowed inside this temple as it is a pilgrimage. This temple was built in the 16th century . Important ceremonies like wedding takes place here at this temple. This temple is well known for the number of elephants it has. They are over 60 in number. They are kept at an old Zamorin Palace.

2) The next place in the list is the Kerala Kalamandalam. This place is located at a place called cheruthuruthy which is at about 32 kms from thrissur. Here students are given intensive training in mohiniyattam, kathakali,kootiattam and also in some musical instruments. A tour around this place will anyhow cost for the tourist. One play is played at each stage or theatre for the tourists. People can also opt for studying any of these courses for a fee.

3) Natana Kairali Research & Training Centre for Traditional Arts:: This place is located at Irinjalakuda which is at a distance of 20 kms from Thrissur. Here, training in traditional arts are given to the students. Tourists can also join short courses here which is for about 1 month.
