History of Chennai
Sunday, November 23rd, 2008I have already posted some details about Chennai, capital of Tamilnadu. Here is a brief history of this place. Chennai has been a main centre for trade and commerce. With the coming of the portuguese followed by dutch and the british, Chennai became one of the most important centre for trade in India. At that time, this place was known as Madraspatnam. The English east India company started in the year 1639 and they built the Fort St.George in the year 1653. Thebn the george town was formed around the Fort St.George and became a municipality by 1688. This is the oldest muicipality in India. Then the French troops came to India. They lost the battle with the British troops and confined themselves to pondicherry. Robert Clive developed this beautiful city which was once the Imperialist capital of the British.
